MAS Hosts IABC Digital Disruption Workshop
Thursday 13 October 2005 --- The IABC Malaysia Chapter recently organised a digital disruption workshop at the Malaysia Airlines Academy in Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya. Thanks to Malaysia Airlines, we had a conducive theaterette for the workshop which was attended by more than 20 earnest members and friends keen on keeping up with the latest digital drends. IABC Malaysia Chapter Treasurer Ian Gan delved into blogging, how a blog could be set up in a matter of minutes, the merits of blogging and even revealed how a murder crime investigation was solved by a blog. Ian, an IABC Gold Quill Winner and an avid blogger, also provided an insight into some of the leading Fortune 500 companies that used the blog to their advantage. For more, Ian can be reached at ian@prpoet.com.

Later, a Skype demonstration, ie, telephony via the web without any cost to you or your receiver, was conducted by IABC President Ghazalie Abdullah. He spoke long distance with IABC member Lee Hopkins of Adelaide, South Australia. Lee rattled at length with Ghazalie and the participants on podcasting. For an insight as to what podcasting is, eavesdrop in on the Skype chat at http://www.leehopkins.net/podcast/intv-ghazalie-lee.mp3. The podcast of the chat is 11.5mb in size; 23minutes 57seconds long. But worth every minute if you are still unfamilar with what this is all about.

Later that evening at the Majlis Berbuka Puasa hosted by Malaysia Airlines, Vanda Chan from Nestle Malaysia Berhad won a headphone/microphone headset in the lucky draw. We gather she went Skype casting later that night.

IABC Honours Winners In The IABC Malaysia Silver Quill Awards 2005

KUALA LUMPUR 4 MAY - The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Malaysia Chapter last night honoured 11 category winners, three division winners and one overall winner in the inaugural IABC Malaysia Silver Quill Awards 2005. Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz presented the awards to the winners.
Edaran Otomobil Nasional Berhad (EON) emerged the grand champion with their entry ‘Better Customer Service, Better Performance’ that garnered the highest score in the competition. The auto retailer also scooped three other category awards and one division award. Tenaga Nasional Berhad followed closely with four category wins and one division award for its 2003 annual report submission. Other winners included WWF-Malaysia who also bagged a division award for their magazine ‘Raising Environmental Awareness Through Green Heart Magazine’. The Standard Chartered Bank (Malaysia) Berhad, Michael de Kretser Consultants (Malaysia), and Alam Flora Sdn Bhd each won a category award.
The awards programme, held for the first time in Malaysia, attracted many participants from corporate Malaysia representing various industries and sectors including automotive, financial, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), utility, non-government organisation (NGO) and services. The IABC Malaysia Silver Quill Awards is a mirror of the IABC International Gold Quill Awards that exemplifies the very best-of-the-best in communications programmes from around the globe. For more than 25 years, IABC’s Gold Quill has been the hallmark of excellence in communication. In 2005, almost 1,000 entries were submitted from 26 countries and only the most outstanding entries were given this award. The Gold Quill programme is an annual international competition which offers professional communicators an opportunity for their work to be evaluated by expert judges.
The IABC Malaysia Silver Quill Awards 2005 was launched in October 2004 with the call for entries. The national competition features 24 categories in three divisions – communication management, communication skills and a newly introduced division in communication creative. The first division; Communication Management includes projects, programmes and campaigns defined by a communication strategy. Award winners have demonstrated the full range of planning and management skills – research, analysis, strategy, tactical implementation and evaluation. The second division; Communication Skills includes communication elements (publications, advertising, websites, newsletters, etc.) that showcase technical skills such as editing, writing and design. Award winners have demonstrated strategic alignment, the creative process and measurable results. The third division, Communication Creative, a newly introduced division which includes elements that showcase creative talent and design through an essentially communicative function.
According to IABC Malaysia Chapter President, Ghazalie Abdullah, “The communication management and communication skills divisions will appeal to corporate communications practitioners while the communication creative division will appeal to advertising agencies and marketing communications professionals. “The Silver Quills competition is not limited to those in the advertising, marketing and communications. It is opened to also those in human resource, IT, finance, film production and even CFOs and CEOs." Winners of the IABC Malaysia Silver Quills will automatically be eligible to compete for the IABC International Gold Quill.
At the same event last night, IABC Patron and guest-of-honour Dato' Seri Rafidah Aziz delivered a stirring keynote address to business communicators in Malaysia, challenging them to upgrade the standards of the industry.

Speaking at the Inter national Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Malaysia National Conference 2004 in Kuala Lumpur on July 21, Mah said the government believed in making decisions on trade matters with substantial input from the private sector.

"We welcome feedback and information from the industry so that our negotiators can work in your interest," Mah said, referring to Malaysia's on-going negotiations for free trade arrangements with other countries.

Mah striking the gong to open the IABC Malaysia National Conference on July 21. Looking on are (from left) Ghazalia Abdullah, president of IABC Malaysia Chapter; Bish Mukherjee, IABC Asia-Pacific regional director; and Nur Amielia Mira, vice president of IABC Malaysia Chapter.

The IABC conference, which started yesterday, will feature 12 international and three local experts speaking on various issues relating to successful communication, said IABC Malaysia Chapter president Ghazalie Abdullah.

He said the two-day conference will provide an opportunity for business communicators from various industries to sharpen their communication skills and knowledge.

"Analysts, critics, pressure groups and the media will be the first to punish you if you do not handle your communication in a proper and effective manner. This can be very damaging to corporate, financial and market brands," he said.

The Edge Weekly is the official publication for the event.

IABC Tea Talk
Changing Trends In Business Writing by John J Hagedorn
hosted by KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Berhad

Bilik Perdana, Third Floor, Wisma KFC, 17 Jalan Sultan Ismail, 50250 Kuala Lumpur
Friday 24 September 2004 @ 5.00 pm

In less than ten years, e-mail has practically obliterated centuries of business letter tradition. Today, for every business letter posted, more than 100 e-mail messages are sent over the Internet. Messages that used to take up to an hour to compose are now dashed out in five minutes or less. In effect, people are taking less time to think about what they mean to say. Results can often be disastrous. This talk will focus on the impact that e-mail has had upon the way we communicate with each other in business writing. We’ll discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages e-mail has presented, and learn some guidelines for using e-mail to its fullest potential. Our Speaker John J. Hagedorn, (BEd, MAT), Director, Training Consultant from Better Training Solutions Sdn Bhd designs and presents professional development seminars in business communications and management training for the corporate and academic communities of the Asia-Pacific region. He has presented programmes in fifteen countries to more than 10,000 participants over the past 15 years. Clients who have benefited from his services include Citibank, Motorola Technology, Thai Airways International, Siemens, and the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
