IABC/Phoenix is the 2004 International Chapter of the Year

"There's nothing more rewarding than being recognized by your peers for being exceptional at what you do and this honor is a tribute to the volunteer leaders of IABC Phoenix and the entire chapter," said Len Gutman, President, IABC Phoenix. "Past President Lorenzo Sierra and his board did an fantastic job running the chapter last year and this honor is a testament to his vision and leadership."

On 20 February, during a special reception at the Leadership Institute, IABC’s President, Julie Freeman, ABC, APR and Chair, Stephanie Griffiths, presented the 2004 Chapter Management Awards.

This year’s winners included Dallas/IABC, IABC/Minnesota, IABC/Phoenix, IABC/Toronto, IABC/Utah, IABC/Washington and Kansas City/IABC. A complete list of winners is available at http://www.iabc.com/leaders/winners.htm. Each chapter winning an award of excellence received a certificate for Knowledge Resources that they may add to their chapter libraries, use as door prizes or give to special members.

IABC/Utah was named Small Chapter of the Year and, for the first time in IABC history, there was a tie for Large Chapter of the Year. Dallas/IABC and IABC/Phoenix shared the honor. In addition to a crystal trophy commemorating their achievement, the Chapters of the Year received a scholarship to send leaders to the 2005 Leadership Institute and a free membership for any chapter member they choose.

IABC Phoenix took home the top prize by being named International Chapter of the Year. Their chapter will receive a scholarship to the International Conference in Los Angeles and will have the distinction of serving as the 2005 CMA competition judges.

Congratulations to all of our winners! To see why they won, check out their work plans at http://www.iabc.com/private/leaders/2004/2004CMAPlans.htm. Information on next year’s CMA program will be available in the Leader Center in August.

Member Recruitment Postcards to be Mailed

During the course of 2004, IABC headquarters will be mailing member recruitment postcards to internal and external prospect lists. We make every effort to purge member names from those lists, but occasionally our systems miss some names. If you happen to be the recipient of a recruitment postcard, please accept our apologies...and feel free to pass it on to a colleague who's not an IABC member!

Some Memberships Extended

Throughout January and February, we implemented a new member database that will raise the efficiency of our processing efforts and result in improved customer service. During the transition, we were not able to notify members in a timely fashion that their membership had been processed. To compensate, we are extending non-ecommerce memberships that began between the date window of 18 December, 2003 and 6 February, 2004 by 45 days at no charge. A renewal year that began in this date window will also be extended. We hope that this gesture helps to make up for our temporary lapse in efficiency.

Best Practices: CMA Workplans Available Online

The Chapter Management Awards program allows IABC to celebrates our chapters’ creativity, planning and management skills. Now, this year’s winners want to share their ideas with you. Their winning work plans are located in the Chapter Awards section of the Leader Center (here: http://www.iabc.com/private/leaders/2004/2004CMAPlans.htm). This is where you will find the newest, most innovative thinking in the areas of financial management, professional development, membership marketing, leadership development, communication, and community and educational involvement. Each work plan serves as a complete template. Check it out to see how your chapter compares or if there are ideas you’d like to incorporate into your chapter’s plans next year. Who knows, you could be the next International Chapter of the Year!

AMCHAM Seeking Corporate Comm Manager
Immediate Vacancy For A Qualified Corporate Communicator To Help Achieve KPIs

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 JULY --- An organization’s reputation, profitability, and even its continued existence can depend on the degree to which its targeted “publics” support its goals and policies. Public relations specialists serve as advocates for businesses, nonprofit associations, industries, universities, hospitals, and other organizations, and build and maintain positive relationships with the public. As managers recognize the growing importance of good public relations to the success of their organizations, they increasingly rely on public relations specialists for advice on the strategy and policy of such programmes.

AMCHAM recognises the need for a Corporate Communications person to handle the communications function such as media, industry, and governmental relations; interest-group representation; conflict mediation; or employee and stakeholder relations. The communicator will help AMCHAM and its public adapt mutually to each other. Public relations is not only about “telling the organization’s story.” Understanding the attitudes and concerns of industry, consumers, employees, and various other target groups is also a vital part of the job.

Malaysian Model Praised
IABC Delegates Amazed At The Easy Effort In Raising The Numbers

The Malaysia chapter drew on the busy communicator when it took the opportunity to attract potentials to a membership cocktail held at the majestic Kuala Lumpur Tower.

Surprisingly, said Ghazalie, not many of the attendees had visited the five-year old landmark and therefore the evening cocktail became an opportunity for a majority to visit.

Ghazalie enthusiastically elaborated to the delegates the tactical steps that led to the Malaysia chapter's 110 per cent growth.

"There was IABC brand-sell. The merits of a membership were expounded. Guests were taken on a walk of IABC's benefits. We had the internet set up for the discovery experience and we had poster boards set up all over the venue to drive home IABC values."

Mention was also made on how he had had tapped on the IABC infrastructure to win a prestigious crystal award from the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia for the Most PR savvy CEO conferred on a major client of his PR consulting firm.

The blend of benefits dazzled 18 potentials who signed up immediately.

Today the chapter has in its fold 35 members comprising communication professionals in consultancy, corporate and from among independents. IABC worldwide has more than 13,000 members in over 60 countries.

"The next measurable goal for Malaysia is a three-digit growth to 100 members. We aim to achieve this through a series of roadshows that bring professional IABC training to Malaysian communicators outside of Kuala Lumpur. The fee for the training will be marketed to incorporate an IABC membership," he explained.

The one and a half day IABC LI 2004 conference in Atlanta saw delegates learning and sharing among a fraternity of volunteers at the Omni Hotel located within the premises of the renowned CNN Centre. The learning experience captured the essence of leadership training set by goals and some of the finest world-class examples.
